Four Subjects Required by Georgia Law for Graduation

Georgia Code 32-171 states that “…no undergraduate student in any college or university shall receive a certificate of graduation or a degree without successfully completing course work or previously passing a satisfactory examination on the history of the United States and the history of Georgia, and upon the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution and the Constitution of Georgia.”

Pursuant to the above, all students must satisfy four legislative requirements to graduate:

  • United States history
  • Georgia history
  • Provisions and principles of the United States Constitution
  • Provisions and principles of the Constitution of Georgia

How to Satisfy the Four Georgia Legislative Requirements (GLRs) Required to Graduate

To learn what you must do to satisfy the four GLRs so that you can graduate, please:

  • Review the FAQ (below),
  • Review the summary information in this graphic and the complete information in these provisions of the Catalog, and
  • Consult with your Academic Advisor to plan how you will satisfy the four GLRs.

FAQ (1) I understand that Georgia Tech revised its implementation of the GLRs by provisions of the Catalog that first went into effect in May 2022. Do these revised provisions apply to me?

The revised provisions of the Catalog apply to you if you are an undergraduate student who entered Georgia Tech in May 2022 or later.

FAQ (2) Can I satisfy all four GLRs by taking courses at Georgia Tech rather than taking examinations?

No, you cannot satisfy all four GLRs by taking courses at Georgia Tech:

  • You can satisfy two GLRs by taking courses at Georgia Tech, and you are encouraged to do so:
    • United States historyHIST 2111 or HIST 2112.
    • Provisions and Principles of the United States ConstitutionINTA 1200 or POL 1101 or PUBP 3000.
    • Note: You are required to include one of the above courses for 3 credits (HIST 2111, HIST 2112, INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUBP 3000) among the total of 12 credits used to satisfy Core Area E (Social Sciences): https://catalog.gatech.edu/academics/undergraduate/core-curriculum/core-.... (top). You may also include more than one of these courses to count toward the total of 12 credits used to satisfy Core Area E.
      • If you include HIST 2111 or HIST 2112, this course will also satisfy the United States history GLR.
      • If you include INTA 1200, POL 1101, or PUBP 3000, this course will also satisfy the Provisions and Principles of the United States Constitution GLR.
  • Georgia Tech does not currently offer any course(s) you can take to satisfy the other two GLRs: Georgia history and Provisions and Principles of the Constitution of Georgia. Georgia Tech only offers examinations to satisfy these two GLRs.

FAQ (3) Can I satisfy one or more of the four GLRs in any way other than by taking Georgia Tech courses or examinations?

Yes, these are the other ways in which you can satisfy one or more of the four GLRs:

  • United States history
    • Transfer in of HIST 2111 or HIST 2112.
    • Receive credit for HIST 2111 or HIST 2112 awarded for a score on an AP or IB examination.
    • If you transfer to Georgia Tech from a University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia institution and submit a transcript indicating you have satisfied this GLR, as determined by the Georgia Tech Registrar’s Office.
  • Georgia history
    • If you transfer to Georgia Tech from a University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia institution and submit a transcript indicating you have satisfied this GLR, as determined by the Georgia Tech Registrar’s Office.
    • If you transfer to Georgia Tech from another accredited transfer institution and have completed a course that is transferable and that has content that satisfies this GLR, as determined by Georgia Tech faculty review.
  • Provisions and Principles of the United States Constitution
    • Transfer in of INTA 1200 or POL 1101 or PUBP 3000.
    • Receive credit for INTA 1200 or POL 1101 awarded for a score on an AP or IB examination.
    • If you transfer to Georgia Tech from a University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia institution and submit a transcript indicating you have satisfied this GLR, as determined by the Georgia Tech Registrar’s Office.
  • Provisions and Principles of the Constitution of Georgia
    • If you transfer to Georgia Tech from a University System of Georgia or Technical College System of Georgia institution and submit a transcript indicating you have satisfied this GLR, as determined by the Georgia Tech Registrar’s Office.
    • If you transfer to Georgia Tech from another accredited transfer institution and have completed a course that is transferable and that has content that satisfies this GLR, as determined by Georgia Tech faculty review.

FAQ (4) How will the GLR examinations be administered?

If you are an undergraduate student who entered Georgia Tech in May 2022 or later (see FAQ (1)), and if you have not satisfied one or more GLRs by taking course(s) at Georgia Tech (see FAQ (2)) or in another way (see FAQ (3)) by your second semester at Georgia Tech, then:

  • Early in your second semester, you will be automatically enrolled in a non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course for each GLR you must satisfy to graduate
  • You will continue to have access to the non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course(s) until you have satisfied the GLR(s), including during semester(s) in which you are enrolled at Georgia Tech on an audit-basis only; during summer(s), whether or not you are enrolled in the summer semester; and during semester break(s).
  • The non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course(s) will not appear on your transcript and the results of your GLR examinations will have no effect on your GPA.
  • There will be no cost for accessing the readings or taking the examinations included in the non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course(s).

Note: In the initial implementation of the revised provisions of the Catalog in academic year 2022-23, students who entered Georgia Tech in summer 2022 and who are in their second semester in fall 2022 will be automatically enrolled in the non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course(s) early in their third semester.

The non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course(s) will include:

  • Readings and sample examination questions to prepare for the examination(s);
  • Instructions about preparing for and taking the examination(s); and
  • Timed multiple-choice examination(s) to be completed online.

Immediately after completing a GLR examination, you will see in Canvas whether you passed or did not pass the examination (60% correct is the passing score).

  • If you passed, you have satisfied that GLR and, early in the subsequent semester:
    • You will be automatically unenrolled in the non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course.
    • You will see an indication of satisfaction of the GLR reflected in DegreeWorks. The following screen shots show examples from DegreeWorks audits.

In the first screen shot, the example student has satisfied all four GLRs.

In the second screen shot, the example student has satisfied the United States history GLR but has not yet satisfied the other three GLRs.

In the third screen shot, the example student has satisfied the United States history and the Provisions and Principles of the United States Constitution GLRs but has not yet satisfied the other two GLRs.

  • If you did not pass, you have not yet satisfied that GLR, and:
    • You will see a notice in Canvas that you have additional opportunities to take the examination plus instructions for how to retake the examination.
    • If the examination was for the United States history or Provisions and Principles of the United States Constitution GLR, you will see a reminder that you can satisfy the GLR by taking a Georgia Tech course rather than by passing a GLR examination (see FAQ (2)).
    • You will remain enrolled in the non-credit Canvas GLR Examination course for that GLR until the semester after you:
      • Pass the examination, or
      • If for the United States history or Provisions and Principles of the United States Constitution GLR, pass a Georgia Tech course that satisfies the GLR (see FAQ (2))
  • If you have not satisfied one or more GLRs by the time you have completed 90 or more credits, you will receive notification by email that:
    • In order to graduate, you must pass the examination(s) or, if for the United States history or Provisions and Principles of the United States Constitution GLR, pass a Georgia Tech course that satisfies the GLR (see FAQ (2)). Because satisfaction of the four GLRs is required by State of Georgia law, this requirement for graduation is not subject to exceptions and may not be petitioned to the Undergraduate Institute Curriculum Committee.
    • You are expected to attend GLR tutoring sessions on the content of the examination(s) until you have passed the examination(s) or, if for the United States history or Provisions and Principles of the United States Constitution GLR, passed a Georgia Tech course that satisfies the GLR (see FAQ (2)).
